WHAT IS BAPTISM?
Maple City Chapel practices believer’s baptism which means that a person should be baptized when they make a personal decision to follow Christ. Baptism is a public confession/declaration of our faith in God.
At times, people who wish to be baptized are aware that something has happened to them spiritually; that they have had a spiritual rebirth and they would like to take next steps in their faith. Baptism is a statement of identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In baptism, we’re illustrating that we have “died” to our old self-centered ways, are “buried” in the water, and are “raised up” as new – spiritually alive.
“For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism, you were also raised with Christ…” Col. 2:12 (GN).
“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” Romans 6:1-4 (NIV)
WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?
Baptism is for anyone who has personally trusted Jesus Christ for salvation and surrendered their lives to him. We typically do not baptize young children because we desire they truly understand and own their faith before taking this step.
“But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” Acts 8:12
“Those who accepted his message were baptized …” Acts 2:41
